Bathroom microcement does not itself require replacing all plumbing. Whether existing services and fittings can stay depends on their condition, layout and the stability of surfaces to be finished.
When retention may be possible
If basin, toilet and shower positions work and no known leak or drainage issue requires access, a finish renovation may retain their locations after assessment. Absence of visible leaks does not prove every concealed pipe is sound, especially after earlier problems. Surfaces must be suitable for preparation and the chosen system.
Replacing fittings versus moving pipes
A new tap or basin at the same position may reuse suitable connections; relocating it requires supply and drainage review. Converting to a wall-hung toilet with concealed cistern needs suitable frame, connections and service access, beyond decorative finishing.
Inspect known problems first
Recurring damp, stains after cleaning, known leaks or poor drainage need a plumbing specialist before surfaces are closed. Microcement does not repair damaged pipes. Decide layout changes first to avoid opening completed finishes.
Over existing bathroom tiles?
Possible only with suitable stable tiles and approved preparation. Treat loose areas and assess cracks, joints and floor condition. Stability alone does not establish the bathroom’s complete suitability: water zones, corners, fitting junctions and drainage also matter. New finish does not automatically correct falls or existing waterproofing.
Match scope to condition
- Old appearance, good layout: assess wall/floor renewal while retaining locations.
- Worn fittings: identify replacements and connection compatibility.
- Leaks or poor drainage: diagnose and define repairs first.
- Uncomfortable layout: review movement and feasible service changes before finishing.
