If filler marks and waves appear after paint dries, colour alone is not the issue. Wall condition, preparation and application all affect the result. Ask about work stages before comparing price.
Inspection first
Check peeling, cracks, damp marks, holes and old fixings. Existing paint is not automatically ready for another coat. Identify and treat ongoing moisture before covering; paint does not repair its source. A small hole differs from a recurring crack and needs appropriate treatment.
Agree preparation
- Protect floors, furniture and doors.
- Remove unsound material and prepare damaged areas.
- Fill and sand as the substrate requires.
- Remove dust before following layers.
- Select primer and paint for the wall and product instructions.
- Observe material-specific drying and recoating times.
Walls need different treatment, but necessary stages should not be omitted simply to lower the price.
Compare equivalent offers
Confirm the same rooms, ceilings and tasks, paint type, preparation, protection, cleaning and separately priced extras. Ask whether colour changes need added coverage and whether repairs are included. Coat count alone does not prove quality; product, earlier colour and substrate affect coverage.
Try the colour in place
Use an actual wall or suitable sample board in daylight and evening light. Sheen and lighting change colour perception and visibility of defects.
Handover
Review walls from normal viewing distances in the home’s usual lighting. Check consistent colour, coverage, edges around doors and switches and floor cleanliness. Locate each issue clearly for review.

Paint over the old colour? Possibly, if sound and compatible, after necessary preparation and inspection.
