Microcement can create a visually continuous floor, but existing movement joints must retain their function and be detailed through the finish. Whether a line can be covered depends on its type and site assessment, especially at doors and other materials.
Different lines have different functions
- Tile grout joints: some systems allow preparation and coverage on a suitable base. Topciment Efectto Quartz describes treatment of tile joints using an appropriate product.
- Movement/expansion joints: these need a functional detail. Topciment’s Microdeck M sheet requires existing structural expansion joints to be respected.
- Finish transitions: a line at wood or stone may be a material junction, potentially over a joint that needs separate assessment.
Do not identify function from width or appearance alone, especially with recurring cracks or old repairs.
Map before covering
Draw room boundaries, doors and columns, visible joints, material changes and earlier service openings. Take close and wide photos. During inspection, identify lines prepared beneath the finish and those continued to its surface. Ideal Work’s Microtopping floor specification aligns finish movement joints with substrate joints to the approved detail. Moving a line for appearance requires technical review.
Doors and thresholds
Define room/corridor finish ends with the door open and closed. A simple section should show transition position, floor build-up and profile. A door’s presence alone does not require or eliminate a joint. Review proposed profile shape, colour and height and door clearance.
Wood or stone junctions
Coordinate both installers: who prepares the edge, installs the profile or joint material and sets final levels? Review both systems’ instructions and view the line from entrance and seating positions.
Does mesh replace a movement joint?
No approval follows from mesh alone. The cited Microdeck M sheet includes reinforcement while still requiring structural joints to be respected. Ask the role of every component and approved detail if someone claims all joints can be covered. Recurring cracks require investigation rather than concealment.
Keep the appearance deliberate
Within the technically permitted detail, review joint-filler colour, profiles and finish termination through a close-up or sample. Discuss central joints early, including furniture layout, rather than at completion.
Questions to record
Which joints remain and where? What products/profiles and details apply? Which cracks or transitions need specialist review? Who prepares each junction, is it included and what care is needed? Send photos of floors, thresholds and transitions before requesting work. References describe particular systems; actual materials and condition govern your detail.
