A suitable microcement system may cover existing ceramic tiles after inspection and preparation. Coverage does not repair loose tiles, leaks or floor movement. Assess condition and use before colour.
What to inspect
Send wide and close photos of joints, edges and damage. Describe movement or different sounds during ordinary walking and earlier leaks or patches. Photos help initial assessment but cannot reveal every defect.
When to pause
Ongoing damp, known leaks, loose tiles, recurring cracks or level differences need diagnosis and defined treatment first. A new finish may hide symptoms while leaving the cause.
Grout joints and movement joints differ
Appearance depends on joint preparation, flatness and the chosen system. There is no single method for every tile floor. Movement joints and material transitions need a technical decision and cannot simply be removed for visual continuity.
Written room-by-room decision
- Ready for preparation: base stable and accepted for the proposed system, with no unresolved moisture or level conflict.
- Repair and recheck: defined treatable defects, repair boundaries and responsible party before finish approval.
- Pending: active movement/moisture or drainage/level issues requiring wider investigation.
This organises specialist assessment rather than providing a classification from photos. CEMHER emphasises tile stability and treatment of loose or hollow-sounding pieces in its system; a sound difference alone does not establish cause or removal extent.
Decision record
Record room and tile type, wide photo, numbered defect locations and close-ups, moisture observations and required test/acceptance, compatible proposed repair/preparation/levelling or further checks, included versus later-priced work, and who rechecks repairs before finishing.
Map movement joints separately from grout joints. Ideal Work’s Microtopping sheet requires existing control joints to be respected. Record total height including preparation, remaining door clearance and transitions to corridors or drains. If repairs change, review levels and price before continuing and retain photos before concealment.
Prepare the home
Identify furniture/appliance moves, doors, edges, drains and bathroom fixture changes. Agree protected routes and return to use. Ask the contractor about suitability, included preparation, exclusions, joints and permitted-use dates.
