A microcement stair specification needs more than colour: walking surfaces, nosings, stable base and protective finish all matter, especially outdoors or with heavy daily use.
Name a system suited to stairs
Request preparation, base, finish and sealer product names and manufacturer suitability. Topciment Sttandard, for example, distinguishes wall products from internal/external floor products. Explain indoor/outdoor location, users, water and sun. Any layer substitution needs compatible technical approval.
Detail the nosing
Stair edges are exposed to impact. Ask for a sketch or sample showing tread-to-riser junction, edge form and protective-profile fixing. Topciment’s stair guidance recommends aluminium edge profiles and a slightly rounded rather than fully sharp edge within its system. The specialist must select the site detail and reinforcement; no detail promises immunity from all damage.
Slip resistance and the whole stair
Matt appearance is insufficient. Request final sealed-finish data, available test report and relevance of its conditions. Topsealer WT Anti Slip is one product example with test and application information, not proof that all microcement performs equally or a guarantee against falls. Discuss visible step boundaries, lighting and handrails with the designer.
Base, joints and levels
Assess stability and cracks. Ideal Work’s Microtopping specification notes possible transfer of substrate defects and continuation of existing joints. Coordinate visual continuity with movement requirements. Review riser and landing levels after the full preparation and system thickness, particularly first/last steps and adjoining floors. Specify base correction separately where needed.
A representative sample
