Existing ceramic tiles are not automatically a suitable epoxy substrate. The decision combines tile stability, the underlying base and compatibility of the proposed complete system. The aim is a floor suited to its use, not simply covering tiles.
Inspect before choosing colour
Identify movement, breakage, uneven levels and known moisture. A specialist should assess the substrate and surrounding areas to define repairs or removal. Cleaning the tile face does not stabilise an unsound base.
Confirm the complete system over tiles
Request the primer, levelling products and finish coat, with confirmation of compatibility with ceramic and each other. A product adhering to tiles does not by itself approve the whole proposed epoxy build-up.
Sika's Sikafloor-01 Primer information, for example, discusses stable tiles, weak areas and surface preparation. That product is a primer for cementitious levelling materials and tile adhesives. The example is not approval for any epoxy over any tile.
Review joints and finished levels
- How will tile joints and existing structural joints be treated?
- What is the final level at doors and thresholds?
- Are drains and falls included?
- What mechanical preparation and dust protection are required?
Put these details in the quotation. Do not accept an undefined promise that joints will disappear or the base will remain stable.
When might removal be needed?
If the base is unstable or does not meet the system requirements, the assessment may identify partial removal, wider removal or another solution. A single photograph does not establish the extent. Compare the complete solution and its scope, and review the epoxy pricing guide.
