When a room combines flat wood-effect panels and painting, agree how the two finishes meet before work begins. A clear scope should identify who prepares the surface, finishes edges and returns for completion items.
Mark the boundaries
Annotate a full-wall photo showing panels and painted areas. Specify full or partial cladding, adjacent walls and ceilings. Photograph corners, doors and skirting. Agree visible ends and transitions, especially where panels finish mid-wall or turn a corner.
Record panel product, model and colour alongside paint product, colour code and sheen. View samples together in the room. A wood appearance does not identify composition or fixing method.
Assign preparation and protection
Specify responsibility and cost for removing old decoration, checking concealed surfaces, and preparing the areas behind cladding and those left visible. State what needs review after exposure.
- Who protects furniture, floors and doors, and removes protection?
- Who assesses each surface and selects preparation?
- Who completes paint boundaries and agreed cut details?
- Are installation debris removal and final cleaning included?
Disclose recurring damp or cracks. Covering them does not replace investigating and treating the cause.
Agree a material-specific sequence
There is no universal paint-first or panel-first sequence. The teams should agree stages from substrate condition, product instructions, drying and protection requirements. Name the coordinator and contact for issues. Record expected stages and return visits for completion; cutting and installation alone do not complete all painting and edges.
Socket relocation, TV brackets and shelves need a defined specialist scope. Confirm final positions and responsibility for removal and reinstatement. Decorative panel installation does not automatically include electrical work or support for suspended furniture.
Compare equivalent quotations
Compare surfaces, areas, products, preparation, protection and completion before totals. Specify exclusions and approval of extras; one quotation may include more painting or old-cladding removal.
Handover checklist
- Compare cladding boundaries and painted surfaces with the approved description.
- Check colours, pattern direction and edges from normal viewing positions.
- Check agreed work around corners and openings.
- Record each issue with a photo and location and assign follow-up.
- Obtain care and return-to-use instructions before moving furniture back.
