Applying microcement over parquet or wood requires identification of the floor, its fixing method and the proposed system’s acceptance of that substrate. A sound-looking face is insufficient. Some systems exclude direct application on wood; others permit it only after defined assessment and preparation.

Identify what “parquet” means here
- Natural or engineered wood: establish whether bonded, mechanically fixed or floating.
- Click laminate: wood appearance does not establish suitability.
- Wood-effect ceramic tiles: assess as tiles rather than wood.
Provide the product or installation invoice if available and photos of already exposed thresholds or edges. Do not remove boards or drill just to inspect; agree any limited exploratory opening as part of a site review.
Why do manufacturers differ?
Topciment’s guidance excludes direct application over natural wood and parquet because movement may transfer stresses, and recommends removal and preparation of the base. Ideal Work’s Microtopping FAQs describe possible application over wood following assessment and preparation, leaving feasibility to the specialist installer. These illustrate different system conditions, not a recommendation or proof of suitability for your floor.
Ask for the proposed system name and instructions accepting your exact floor type and fixing method before direct covering enters the quotation.
Floating floors need particular attention
Boards connect without permanent fixing to the base. Quick-Step explains floating installation and states that its laminate is not intended for glue-down installation. If fixing the existing laminate or adding layers is proposed, require details compatible with both floor and new finish. Primer or mesh alone does not establish a suitable complete assembly.
Pause direct covering when you see
- Movement or deflection during normal walking.
- Swelling, raised edges or separating boards.
- Earlier leaks or unresolved moisture.
- Unknown patches or differing floor layers between rooms.
These call for examination, not a photo diagnosis. Record repairs and substrate readiness. If suitability cannot be demonstrated for the chosen system, consider removal to an assessable base or another suitable finish.
If removal is needed
Separate removal from inspection of the exposed base before final preparation approval. Adhesive residues, unevenness or old repairs may be discovered; agree approval of extras first. Review skirting, thresholds, final levels and door clearance after all preparation and finishing, including transitions to retained floors and reinstatement responsibilities.
Record before approval
Keep the current floor and fixing details, system and substrate acceptance or reason for removal, movement/moisture findings and repairs, removal and protection scope, transitions and levels, stages and product-specific conditions for walking and returning furniture. “Goes over any surface” is not a sufficient specification.
