When epoxy peels or develops blisters, recoating over the defect is not an automatic repair. First identify the affected layer and substrate condition, then specify compatible preparation and repair.
Appearance does not establish the cause
Peeling is separation of a layer and a blister is a local rise, but a photograph does not diagnose why it happened. Record location, size and timing, including whether the issue followed washing, a spill or a change in use. Provide the product and installation date if known.
What should a specialist review?
- Substrate and existing-layer stability and where separation occurs.
- Moisture, measurement method and system acceptance limits.
- Oil or other contamination.
- Preparation, mixing and intervals between coats.
- Installation temperature and humidity.
Sika's water-based epoxy information discusses moisture-related blistering and repair needs. Sikafloor-161 HC information also notes that primer pinholes can lead to blisters in a subsequent coat. These are possibilities to investigate, not a diagnosis for every floor.
Specify the repair scope
Request the area of coating removal, substrate preparation, compatible materials and any trial before wider application. If the cause is unidentified, covering its visible result is not a confirmed remedy.
Will a local repair disappear completely?
Discuss colour, texture, sheen and repair boundaries. Approve an appropriate trial if required, and confirm return-to-use and care instructions. Neither a cause nor an invisible blend should be promised without assessment.
Prepare overall and close-up photographs and describe when the problem appeared. Compare written epoxy quotation scopes before deciding.
