Some microcement systems are designed for bathrooms, but the category name is insufficient. Select a complete system for the specific surface and exposure: a wall away from water differs from a shower floor.

Leaks are a separate problem
Wall damp or leakage below needs diagnosis and source repair before renewal. A microcement finish does not automatically guarantee plumbing or waterproofing; define those scopes separately.
Shower coordination
Show drains, falls, corners, wall/floor junctions and water outlets. Record finish and auxiliary products, use zones and responsibility for each stage. Mixed-brand compatibility requires technical confirmation.
Four details to document
- Waterproofing-to-drain connection: specify compatible parts and materials beneath the cover. Schluter’s shower guidance illustrates this connection within its own assembly, not approval beneath any microcement.
- Corners and penetrations: record floor/wall intersections, pipe exits and niche edges to the approved system.
- Falls and final levels: define water paths, cover/edge height after all layers and adjustment responsibility.
- Later fixings: plan glass and accessories while protecting waterproofing and drain-cover removal for cleaning.
For existing tiles, record what is known about old waterproofing and what remains unverified. Tiles or absence of visible leakage alone do not prove hidden integrity.
Waterproofing tests and drainage trials differ
A waterproofing test checks leakage in the assembly; a drainage trial checks water direction and ponding after finishing. Neither substitutes for the other. Schluter describes water testing before covering its system after required curing. Your specialist sets method, timing and duration for actual materials; do not transfer another product’s figures or improvise flooding.
Keep the test record
Record zone, stage, date, responsible person, procedure, result, repairs and retesting, plus photos before concealment. Obtain water-use permission, care and follow-up responsibilities. Include door/drain levels and wet-area slip assessment in the handover file. Manufacturer references describe particular systems, not necessarily your project products.
Without demolition?
Existing finishes may be retained after assessment; loose tiles or plumbing access may require removal or extra work. Do not assume a demolition-free result before inspection.
Appearance and timing
Discuss shade, texture and sheen through samples in actual lighting and agree hand-applied variation. Record execution, first water exposure and cleaning separately according to system and conditions. Disclose if this is the home’s only bathroom so alternatives can be arranged.
